Stop Water Before It Starts: Why Sealing and Waterproofing Interior Wall Foundation Cracks Matters

Whenever I walk into a basement that has water intrusion issues, I always look for clues such as cracks on the wall or the floor slab. Some are tiny hairline cracks and others are ugly ones with water gushing out. Whatever the case may be they need to be addressed permanently!

When it comes to protecting your Connecticut home from water damage, the smallest cracks can lead to the biggest headaches. Interior wall foundation cracks are more than just cosmetic flaws — they’re potential gateways for water, moisture, and even pests to enter your basement.

At Basement Boss, we’ve seen it all — from hairline cracks that slowly seep water during storms to wide fractures that allow gallons in during heavy rains. Sealing and waterproofing these cracks isn’t just maintenance, it’s protection for your home’s structure, value, and safety.

Why Foundation Wall Cracks Form

Connecticut’s climate puts homes through extreme seasonal changes — freezing winters, wet springs, and hot, humid summers. This constant expansion and contraction of your foundation can cause stress fractures. Other causes include:

  • Hydrostatic pressure from saturated soil around your foundation. It literally pushes against your home constantly.

  • Settling and shifting over time.

  • Poor drainage around the home. Lack of gutters or gutter extenders away from home.

  • Construction shrinkage cracks in new concrete that has bee poorly poured or the concrete mixture is disproportionate.

Don't Ignore Cracks!

Even a crack you can barely see can cause major problems:

  1. Water Infiltration

Unsealed cracks that are either hairline or allow water to seep in during storms or snowmelt, leading to a wet basement and possible flooding.

  2. Mold & Mildew Growth

Moisture creates the perfect breeding ground for mold, which can spread quickly and impact indoor air quality. Mold is bad news! It is costly to remove and can hinder your future selling ability.

  3. Structural Compromise

Think about it, concrete is made with water! It is porous! Over time, water infiltration can deteriorate the integrity of your concrete, causing the crack to widen and the problem to worsen.

  4. Increased Repair Costs

What starts as a simple seal can turn into an expensive structural repair if left unaddressed. Smaller cracks can be sealed in a few hours. Large foundation cracks are sealed using rebar and lots of digging!

Sealing Cracks the Basement Boss Way!

When we seal and waterproof your foundation wall cracks, we:

  1. Inspect the crack to determine cause and severity. We measure the width and length of the crack.

  2. Clean & prepare the surface for maximum adhesion. We open up the crack with a rotary hammer about 1" wide and 3" deep.

  3. Depending on the severity of the crack, we apply our waterproofing polymer and sealant to the area and let dry.

  4. Then we apply a coat of cement/mortar mix to the crack and let sit.

  5. We then apply a second coat of our waterproofing polymer and Finish & smooth the wall for a clean, professional look

  6. Conduct a water Test to ensure the repair is watertight.
